The Best Homesteading Blogs

Whether you’re searching “prepping 101” or “how to raise chickens,” you’re bound to wind up on a homesteading blog. These sites are usually chock full of useful information you would otherwise need to find out the hard way!

However, it probably comes as no surprise that there are a million homesteading blogs out there (some more helpful than others). With the internet being an endless pit of information, how do you know which homesteading blogs are the best and most accurate?

In this post, we’ll list some of the best blogs about homesteading so that you can rest assured that you’re tapping into the most relevant information.

Why Keep Up with Homesteading Blogs in the First Place?

We’re big fans of blogging here at Homestead or Dead (shocking, we know). When we started our homesteading journey many years ago, our time was spent studying and researching. Can you guess where we ended up? BLOGS.

Knowledge comes in various forms, especially in our day and age. This could be anywhere from books to podcasts and Youtube videos. However, one of our favorite ways to keep up with these crazy times is through blogging.

Blogs are one of the best sources of finding information, not only because there are tons of them out there, but if they’re good blogs, they’re sourced properly and a much faster way to gain information.

Think of it. Why listen to a 45-minute podcast when you can read an article that sums up the same thing in 800 words? Why buy a magazine about the latest trends on bitcoin when you can read a free blog with the same information?

Plus, blogs are accessible. All you have to do is bookmark your favorite blogs in your internet browser and keep up with them on a weekly basis. Just sit down on the john with your tablet or phone and get scrolling!

Homestead or Dead

We have a few homesteading blogs that we’re fans of that we’d like to share, but before we jump into that, we want to do a little self-endorsement here and promote what we believe is one of the best, most thoughtful homesteading blogs out there – ours!

Homestead or Dead has been around for quite some time, covering an array of homesteading topics like gardening, hunting, food storage, and so much more. We’re all about staying relevant, too. For example, when the pandemic hit, we quickly changed gears and covered topics that our audience found helpful.

At the end of the day, we want to provide pertinent tools and information to our audience that’s light, fun, and engaging so you don’t feel like you’re reading a college textbook.

We aim to break down both prepping and homesteading in a practical way so you can feel confident providing for yourself and your family. After reading one of our posts, we hope you’ll get out there and get er done.

An Off-Grid Life

Another blog we’re happy to promote is An Off Grid Life. This former city-dwelling family chose to make a major shift and live off the grid in subarctic Canada. Pretty inspirational, huh?

What we love about their blog most is that they bring in a family element that most blogs don’t. This couple does a great job not only covering practical topics like solar power and how to cook with a wood-burning stove, but also family-friendly topics like rustic and pioneer Christmas crafts for kids and lots of delicious recipes you can make with your kiddos.

Weed ‘Em & Reap

If you’re a city dweller who longs to homestead, this blog is for you! Weed ‘Em and Reap is rich with topics about urban farming – from becoming a modern farmer to farm-to-table meals, DIY projects, nontoxic living, and more.

After being diagnosed with a chronic illness, DaNelle left her life of luxury and purchased a ranch with her husband where she could live a simpler, healthier life.

One of the best things about this blog is not only the content, but her presence on social media. You can find DaNelle on practically every social media platform, plus she makes amazing Youtube videos to accompany her posts.

The Prairie Homestead

One of the questions that Jill asked herself growing up was, “why do I have to do it like everyone else?”. This question led her to find a sense of belonging through her homestead living blog, The Prairie Homestead

Jill covers topics involving livestock, gardening, homeschooling, and more. Her blog isn’t the only intriguing thing – she also has a podcast. Her impressive team is constantly putting out polished content on the regular for anyone who wants to live a healthier, more wholesome lifestyle.

Pure Living For Life

We’ll be honest. This blog takes after its name in that it’s pretty barebones, but trust us when we say it’s unlike most homesteading blogs out there.

Pure Living for Life covers practical topics involving equipment, purchasing land, dealing with the elements, and more! They even discuss things like losing your furry friend, chipping away at debt, foraging for wild food, etc.

Their topics are unique and answer questions you may not even know you had. We’re sad to say they haven’t been active in a while, but they have enough content on their page to keep you busy for quite some time.
