Best Homesteading Podcasts

We’ve talked about the best homesteading blogs here at Homestead or Dead, but what about podcasts? If you’re not much of a reader and prefer to learn in an auditory way, then having a solid list of homesteading podcasts to listen to may be exactly what you need.

Having an arsenal of podcasts to listen to during your spare time (or even while you’re busy getting stuff done!) will be sure to help you gain expert knowledge and further enhance your homesteading experience.

Why Listen to Podcasts?

Let’s first discuss why homesteaders would want to listen to a podcast.

Well, for starters, podcasts are a great alternative to traditional ways of gaining information like books, magazines, and blogs. Reading can take up a great deal of time and doesn’t easily allow a person to multitask while doing it.

As homesteaders, we’re always on the go – whether it be cleaning out the chicken coop or maintaining our hugelkultur garden beds. When you have a list of chores to get done, the idea of putting on a pair of headphones, getting work done, and learning simultaneously is a win-win solution.

Podcasts also give you the opportunity to cut back on screen time, which we could all use less of. Plus, you can gain valuable information from experts without needing to pay for it.

In addition, why hold onto a physical book or magazine when you can subscribe to your favorite podcasts on your phone? It not only takes up less space but also allows you to share it with friends and family easily.

(Because let’s be honest, your neighbor is never going to give you back that book you lent him last year…)

The Best Homesteading Podcasts

So, what are the best homesteading podcasts to listen to?

With thousands of podcasts out there, it can be overwhelming to choose from. So we’ve listed the top homesteading podcasts we recommend and a brief description about each so you can find a few that align with your goals as a homesteader!

Pioneering Today

One of the most listened-to podcasts about homesteading is Pioneering Today, and for a good reason! Melissa K. Norris’ podcast focuses on a variety of pertinent homesteading topics for everyone looking to live a healthy, self-sufficient life.

What we love most about her podcast is how she gives clear advice on tackling various projects regarding gardening, food preservation, livestock, buying and selling land, natural medicine, and so much more.

She also has episodes that strictly focus on answering the audience’s questions about various subjects. We love that her topics are seasonal, too. For example, “What to Plant in August” or “A Homesteader’s Gift Guide” for the holidays.

With just two episodes per month, you’ll be satisfied with meaningful content and enough time to process the information and put it into action.

The Survival Podcast

The Survival Podcast with Jack Spirko is sure to be a treat for homesteaders and preppers alike. If his slogan doesn’t say it all, we don’t know what will: “Helping you live a better life if times get tough or even if they don’t.”

With his podcast going all the way back to 2008, you can be sure you’re listening to an expert on topics like survivalism and sustainability – among other things like permaculture, welding, shotguns, and so much more.

Spirko puts out quite a bit of content (5 episodes per week). He may not always touch on pertinent topics for your specific homesteading goals, but you’ll be sure to find at least one or two a week that spark your interest.

The Homesteading Journey

Brain Wells over at the Homesteading Journey is a realistic, down-to-earth guy looking to help out fellow homesteaders like himself.

Wells lives in upstate NY with his wife and children and is “dedicated to the pursuit of self-sufficiency, self-reliance, and sustainability.” As a 4th generation homesteader, he has a lot to say about maintaining his 2 acre piece of land.

We like that he keeps us up to date on his pursuits. For example, you can find podcast topics like “how successful were we in growing potatoes.” Instead of naming the episode “how to grow potatoes,” Wells takes you on the journey with him and keeps you in the loop on his discoveries.

Wells releases eight episodes per quarter, which may not seem like a lot, but to us, this assures us that he’s out working hard to come back to the table with valuable information.

The Homesteady

Aust and his wife over at The Homsteady have an amazing homesteading testimony that will keep just about everyone interested.

Focusing mainly on livestock and hunting, these former city dwellers (who once didn’t even own a chicken) have come a long way and are here to make your modern homesteading journey less intimidating.

This couple releases a new episode once every quarter and talks about how to put food on the table – whether it be by field, stream, garden, etc.

Their slogan is “The road is rocky. Make it home steady.” Pretty cute, huh?

The Scott Terry Show

Looking to learn practical homesteading skills and be told like it is? Then The Scott Terry Show podcast is for you!

Scott and his guest speakers discuss various topics, from “farming, homesteading, permaculture, preparedness, agrarianism, organic agriculture, gardening, pasture management, off-grid living, current events, reformed theology, and more.”

With more than 40 years of homesteading experience, Scott gives his listeners a sensible view of living off-grid with a family. With two episodes per month, you’ll surely have a lot to chew on before the next one comes out.
